Somewhat chic sushi bar tucked away downtown. Cheap rolls, but not really a bang for your buck. Piranha Killer Sushi ends up being more of a victim to bad presentation than a "killer" place to find great rolls.
spring rolls: **
These are more like egg rolls. Great presentation from the kitchen. While they were hard to handle, they were pretty tasty.
hamachi (yellowtail) roll: ***
I asked the sushi chefs to make it spicy. Perhaps I should have clarified. Instead of adding peppers, they opted for the spicy mayo, which masked the yellowtail. The rolls were also very compact and kind of small.
spicy tuna roll: ***
My lunch partner actually asked for spicy mayo on this roll…so it wasn’t a classic tuna. But it wasn’t the best I’ve ever had.
spicy scallions roll: ***
Decent. This one was also drenched in mayo, so I couldn’t get much of a scallion taste.
The one specialty roll that we ordered sounded great on the menu – shrimp tempura with asparagus, topped with salmon and avocado. However, the presentation was horrible! Some pieces had avocado on top of the salmon, and some didn’t. The avocado didn’t look fresh either. We should’ve just ordered the shrimp tempura roll plain.
saketini: ****
I'm not sure what it says about me when the cocktail is the only consumable thing that warrants four stars is a potent potable, but whatever. Absolut pear vodka + sake made the drink a little too strong for me (some kind of juice would have been nice). I ended up adding lime...and giving half to my friend. Still, if you're looking for a strong martini, this is your best bet.
the dragon roll. what in the hot, random mess is going on with this presentation?!? |
It was a slow business day (even though it was Friday at lunchtime), so the ambiance wasn’t abuzz with patrons. Our waiter was very attentive, and was flexible with our requests to modify our rolls.
Overall, this is a good place to stop in for a quick sushi fix, but the star rating is apropos. This place is just kinda meh.
